  • Lancashire Day 2010 (6 photos)

    Why Lancashire Day?

On this day in 1295 the first elected representatives from Lancashire were called to Westminster by King Edward I to attend what later became known as "The Model Parliament".
The Lancashire Day proclamation is read out by town criers throughout the county on 27th November.
The Church of St Mary Magdalene’s will be celebrating Lancashire Day on the 27th November 2010, in the Church Hall.

There will be a hot-pot lunch, concert and quiz. The day will also see the proclamation of the loyal toast, to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Duke of Lancaster.

We also have Optimun TV, production company filming with us for a BBC2 regional food programme, which will be broadcasted in March 2011.

Lisa Allen, Head Chef at Northcote Manor, Blackburn, will also be on hand to cook up traditional Lancashire farye in addition to our own Anne Croft’s Traditional Lancashire Hot Pot.

  • Confirmation & Holy Communion (6 photos)

Confirmation is in all Christian Churches a rite of initiation normally by laying on of hands and anointing for the purpose of bestowing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. In some denominations, confirmation bestows full membership in the church upon the recipient. In others, such as the Roman Catholic Church, confirmation "renders the bond with the Church more perfect", but a baptized person is already a full member.

Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox Churches, and many Anglicans view Confirmation as a sacrament. In the East it is conferred on infants immediately after baptism, but in the West it is usually administered later at the age of reason or in early adolescence.

  • Run the Race (59 photos)

Run the Race is Bishop Nigel's pilgrimage to all parishes in the diocese. It began in May 2006 with his first visit to St Clements, Chorlton and St Mary, Davyhulme and came to St Mary Magdalene's on Wednesday 28th April 2010

Under the banner 'Run the Race, Look to Jesus', the bishop hopes to encourage every parish to pass on the baton of faith to the next generation. By the end of 2008, the Bishop of Manchester will have completed over 100 mission visits by the end of this year.

  • Holy Week & Easter (26 photos)

The Church during Holy Week & Easter.

Holy Week in Christianity is the last week of Lent and the week before Easter. It includes the religious holidays of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) and Good Friday, and lasts from Palm Sunday (or in the Eastern, Lazarus Saturday) until but not including Easter Sunday, as Easter Sunday is the first day of the new season of The Great Fifty Days. It commemorates the last week of the earthly life of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Easter is the central religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. Some Christians celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday and three days after Maundy Thursday. The chronology of his death and resurrection is variously interpreted to be between AD 26 and AD 36. Easter also refers to the season of the church year called Eastertide or the Easter Season. Traditionally the Easter Season lasted for the forty days from Easter Day until Ascension Day but now officially lasts for the fifty days until Pentecost. The first week of the Easter Season is known as Easter Week or the Octave of Easter. Easter also marks the end of Lent, a season of fasting, prayer, and penance.
